Letter : London, [England], to Luke Gardiner, Dublin, [Ireland], 1776 Aug. 22.

Forbes comments on the Irish law which prohibited fencing of woods by an owner without the consent of his tenants, and relates that news is received from General Clinton and Lord Cornwallis of a "small disappointment before Charles Town," where they could not land the army to attack a fort (Fort Moultrie) near the town. The "disappointment" (defeat of the British forces at Charleston and Sullivan's Island, S.C. on June 28, 1776) is attributed to incorrect information about the depth of water to the shore. Forbes also mentions a preferment for Gardiner's brother, who is related to a general [Howe?].
